There are soooo many great Sumerian proverbs. They are witty and funny and as true today as they were four thousand years ago. These are some of my favorites as translated, in large part, by Edmond Gordon:
He who eats much can't sleep.
Into an open mouth, a fly enters.
Hand to hand - a man's house is built.
Stomach to stomach - a man's house is destroyed.
Who has much silver can be happy;
who has much grain may be glad;
but he who has nothing can sleep.
A scribe who's hand moves as fast as the mouth, that's a scribe for you.
In a city without watch dogs, the fox is the overseer.
