Historical event in June/July, 238 AD in Rome:

When Gallicanus persuaded the people outside the Senate House to kill the enemies of the senate, the people pursued the praetorian guards in the forum with showers of stones. But the troops were too quick for them. In spite of a few casualties, they took refuge in the Praetorian Camp and shut the gates. During these riots, the Urban Prefect appointed by the emperors, was killed in the mob riots. Nobody really liked Sabinus much any way. The mob was persuaded by Gallicanus to break into the public armories (typically used only for ceremony), and to put on any protective armor they could. Thousands of gladiators were released from barracks and unleashed hell on to the Praetorian Camp for days. Death came to both sides for several days and Emperor Balbinus tried to make edicts to stop this. Quintus Cinna had not rested during the entire time at Fabricius Flavius' domus and guards were set to watch at all hours of the day.

The foreign praetorians fired arrows down at the people and defended them off with long spears. After nearly ten days, Balbinus managed a temporary truce because the public was exhausted and wounded. Seeing the people laxed, a small cohort launched on the neighboring areas around the camp and killed many residents. More came out and they killed gladiators and city guards who could only scramble. After chasing them away from the camp for a short distance, the troops returned and stayed shut up behind the walls for a few more days.

As a result of this incident, the fury of the senate and people increased. Commanders were chosen and recruits enrolled all over Italia. An Annianus and Clodius Celsinus assisted in the recruitment of all youth groups and equipped them with makeshift weapons. Daily attacks were made against the camp fortifications, but with little success. The soldiers fought back from their superior height, and the attackers came off badly. The emperors offered the soldiers amnesty, by offering them pardon for all their crimes but neither side listened, and every day the lawlessness grew worse.

Quintus Cinna had watched people kill others outside the domus walls with any excuse given. He could not see the Praetorian Camp for it was a few miles north-east, but he knew the crime and trouble it brought rippled through the city.
