    Richard III's next older brother, George Duke of Clarence, was executed on this day in 1478 upon writ issued by then King Edward IV. Legend says Clarence elected to be drowned in a butt of malmsey wine. Another legend says that two executioners crept up on Clarence and dragged him to the tun of wine and drowned him without a shriving first. A third legend says he was just poisoned. In any event, his demise occurred Today in History!
