    The frigidarium was not artificially cooled, but was kept cool by having high roofs, small windows and cold (unheated) water in the pools. To enter the Basilica St. Maria degli Angeli (actually the frigidarium of the Baths of Diocletian) in Rome today, on a hot day, is to experience how well this design worked.
