*sigh* I know, I know. But I couldn't even get completely through the first CD of The Tudors because of one simple fact. Yup, it was sexy. Yup, the costumes were fun and seeing everyone the age of young juvenile delinquents was energizing.
But from the moment that poor Sam Neill as Woolsey started talking about "world peace" and a conference to find peace with - France, Spain, whatever - and the second Henry chimed in for that - I got so disgusted I had to turn it off. Sorry, guys! I can enjoy things too by totally separating what REALLY happened from the movie experience ("Braveheart" was the classic for that). But this is such a major misunderstanding on the part of The Tudors' writers of (a) history (b) social history (c) Henry (d) Woolsey (e) EVERYONE else, that I lost all faith in the series and found it boring. Off it went!
You can say many things about Henry VIII and the Tudors, but to think even for one second that some kind of pre-ECU mentality existed is to misunderstand the period and the ruling class totally, and I just can't recommend this for anyone unless you have this disclaimer in front of it:
THE PLOT OF THIS SERIES
IS HISTORICALLY ALMOST ENTIRELY
INACCURATE, SO DON'T BELIEVE A WORD OF IT
JUST HAVE FUN AND PRETEND IT'S FICTION
(BECAUSE IT LARGELY IS)
Now, that said, enjoy it - just don't BELIEVE it!
