    Having logged many hours on the Ren Faire circuit, I happen to know that there was a secret ingredient they used to mix with the lime so that it wouldn't burn their scalp. They mixed it with a dash of urine! Sorry I can't cite the source for this. Trust me, it was a reliable source. Repeated limings did make the hair fall out because after all lime is also used in leatherworking to remove the hair from hides. As a side note, I don't think the warriors walked around in everyday life with limed hair. It was probably limed and spiked just before battle and rinsed out afterwards.
