I am thrilled that you're getting administrative support from the new government, just as I am appalled that - if I read your post right - the logging of under $1M annually in terms of profits, is threatening to destroy $220M in travel and tourism. But what particularly fascinates me personally is your search to find a way to make tourism a tool of preservation while NOT letting it be destructive - I can't wait to read more!

Dr. Hansen, I've browsed repeatedly at Amazon looking for a few books for a novice (like me) that would help give me the basics on Maya history and culture - and there are simply TOO many. And of course, I'm not only interested in the Maya - besides your books and other suggestions (particularly for the Spanish, thank you!) - could you throw out a title or to I can begin with?
