The Roman ideal of living was a country-side villa, but most Romans lived in insulae, or "apartment buildings." An insula was typically 3-5 stories high, and the first floor was often reserved for businesses.
I'd like to start with a question: why were the lower stories of the insulae more comfortable and expensive for the tenants? :-)
