A tangram is a rearrangement puzzle consisting of a square cut into seven pieces to be ressembled into different figures. The first known rearrangement puzzle was of Greek origin and dates to the third century BC. It was called the Stomachion, or the Loculus Archimedes. It was named after the Greek philosopher who wrote about the puzzle more than 2,200 years ago. As described in the fourth century by the Roman poet Ausonius, the puzzle consisted of fourteen ivory pieces which could be used to form thousands of figures of human beings, animals, and objects.
