WHAT HAPPENED IN 1066 is the single most important
event between the establishment of ‎a united
English kingdom by Aethelstan & the signing of the
Magna Carta. The conquest not ‎only tied the
British Isles irrevocably to a more continental
    Latinate civilization & ( at the ‎time, anyway)a
more aucourant mode of military technology. It was
the fusion of Norman ‎military land tenure &
NATIVE ANGLO-SAXON traditions & INSTITUTIONS of
self-‎government that allowed the English nation
to have the MOST potential for fruitful
‎development of polity; however unfortunate &
regretable it was for the natives at the time
‎of the conquest. The new England Town meeting
is THE FOUNDATIONAL mode of political ‎behavior
in USA, & it is the result of 500 odd years of unique
    development of parlimentary ‎government in
England. 1066 belongs to both the UK, NZ, AUS, the USA
& Canada. The ‎story of what happened in English
history between the year of the succession of
Aethelread ‎‎2 & the completion of the
Domesday book is one of the most dramatic 100 year's
‎continuous narrative of events in History. Then
there is the Language issue: We have a ‎GREAT
language with an unprecidentedly HUGE vocabulary; a
language that is muscular & ‎supple; robust yet
sensitive to nuance; capable of great metaphoric
flight & of the most ‎exacting precision. It has
the 3rd largest number of native speakers on the
planet, & the 1st ‎largest number of speakers
who use it as a second language. As the global
shrinks, English ‎expands. It will be one of the
few survivor languages upon complete fusion of the
globe into ‎ONE polity. NO TV special has yet to
    do justice to 1066: 1066 started circa 1000, & didn't
‎end till circa 1090. The full story reads like
tragedy, & its a well documented plot-driven tale
‎chock full of amazing, colorful characters. I
await the 100 part mini-series like he who waits
‎for the dawn. BTW Oct 14, 2066 will be a HUGE
media extravaganza in the UK. The ‎anglophone
world right now is bursting with enourmous thespian
talents. I understand the ‎BBC is considered an
arm of the government over there. Why should we wait?
Lets Start ‎petitioning them to DO IT RIGHT for
a change: 1066 was a long range boon, but a short
‎range DISASTER; William The Bastard was NOT the
hero; Harold Godwinson was the ‎Patriot.
