Olaf listened to all the words which Hylas poured out against Giton, and while he had to admit that some of the things were true--at least partially--others were just based on dislike. He denied having slept with the actor, but Hylas was too sharp to not notice that the idea interested him...finally, Olaf just threw up his hands and shook his head.
"I do not talk of it more! Giton was tricked by Lykon as much as Philandros, and he got seriously hurt when he tried to warn of it...no one has given chance to explain because they not like him!"
Hylas stared at the blond for some time, realizing that the boy wouldn't be moved further--it would be up to time and circumstance to convince him whether there was truth in Giton's words. He began instead to talk of the kittens, describing the white furball with the reddish spots which was the only unclaimed progeny of Flora, and how he intended that Philandros should have it. Olaf said he had seen cats, but had no real contact with one, but he loved the way they hunted mice and were so graceful.
"Philandros will love the cat...he is going to be at least another week or two before he can walk again, says Spur...doctor, and will be a bit restricted after that for a while--not walking too far...will be good for him to have something to love since...."
Olaf did not mention Sextus, but Hylas was pretty certain that that was what the german meant--why else would such a look leave a shadow in those clear blue eyes? Olaf had to know that while Philandros might be fond of him--even physically attracted to him--their places in society were just too different for an actual relationship? A new thought came to Hylas:
"Olaf, you're not going around with Giton because Philandros hasn't said he loves you...are you?"
The look which the giant shot Hylas was quick, and as quickly hidden. "Is stupid idea--Philandros love me? I am ex-slave, why should he love me...or I love him? He treat me well, is all! You crazy greek after all--thinking wild things just to make talk about them! Archelaus already tell me about philo..sophers, and that I never talk to them!"
To show that there was no hard feeling between them, Olaf once more took the slight greek into his arms, giving him a strong hug and a long kiss.
"You my first friend, I not forget--but you must come see Philandros soon, or I become very angry on you! You not want that, I think!" He let go and stood, giving a nice bow to the others present.
Olaf approached Pallas and offered him the money for the scrolls he had found for his friend, and bowed awkwardly. "My friend will like this shop--is quiet and full of books! I will bring him when he recovers enough--perhaps you come visit him? Bring more books as he read a lot?"
