After taking the tour the other day, my thoughts were haunted for some time about the bog people. Oh, that I could travel back into time and learn the real stories behind their deaths.
Seshat and I talked briefly about why the bog people are more distrubing than say, Egyptian mummies. To me, the disturbing feeling comes from the evidence that these were murdered (sacrificed or executed might be more accurate words) people. They did not fall into these bogs accidentally. They were unlucky people - victims of human sacrifice or executions for crimes or perceived social imperfections (the inspiration for my two poems).
The facial reconstructions really brought home the fact that the bog people were once flesh and blood human beings who lived in timber houses, made babies, worked farms, raised animals, manufactured tools, etc. As the clever tour demonstrated, many of them died violent deaths. Shudders just thinking about that.
