Set I dedicated his period of rule to the continued rebuilding of Egypt begun by Tutankhamun. Campaigns were led to strengthen the borders of the country and to secure the booty from these and annual tributes from vassal states. This was all needed for the great building projects he was to begin. The record of his campaigns during his first years of rule are to be found on the outer north and east walls of the temple of Amun at Karnak.

Among his building projects are the Great Hypostyle Hall at Karnak with 134 columns which his son Ramesses II completed, and the cult temple at Abydos which is famous for its exquisite reliefs which reached a level of craftsmanship rarely seen elsewhere. On the West Bank his mortuary temple deserves mentioning and his tomb, KV17 in the Valley of the Kings is of an entirely new layout as tombs go, with a long tunnel where the sunīs journey through the night sky and the mysteries of its rebirth is elaborately illustrated. Theastronomical ceiling in the burial chamber is also unusual as it shows, apart from the sky goddess Nut, the constellations of stars on the northern sky.

Seti I reigned for 13 years and during his time Egypt reached a level of sophistication and maturity in art and culture which it scarsely equalled in times to come. One of his additional titles means "Repater of Birth" and as a new birth his period of rule has gone down the annals.
