Memphis was the Lourdes of the Ancient World. We know it best under its Greek name, the Asclepion, "Asclepius's Place." For the Greeks, who came to dominate Egypt at the time of the Ptolemies in the third century B.C. exalted Imhotep to full-fledged member in the pantheon. He became Egypt's god of medicine. he became the son of Ptah. The statuettes of shaven-headed priest gave way to a new image showing the deity complete with beard, scepter in one hand, and the symbol of life and happiness in the other. Places of worship were established from the marshes of the delta to the sands of Nubia.
