The Temple of Quetzalcoatl
This is the Temple of Quetzalcoatl and in this is the most important temple in this area near my palace. Here and there you will find information about Aztecs as well as maybe see the occasional sacrifices done by priests.
March 12 , 2010 This is the Templo Mator. Templo Mayor was said to be the temple of Quetzalcoatl. This was ironic, since it was used for the largest number of human sacrifices, while many sects of Quetzalcoatl’s followers believed that he was against human sacrifice. Around the temple were many structures used for religious ceremonies. Some were used for storing the human sacrifices prior to ceremonies. The human sacrifices generally came from war captives, although some were Aztecs who volunteered to be sacrifices. This was considered an honorable way to die, second only to dying in battle. Like most temples of the region, Templo Mayor started out as a relatively small pyramid shaped shrine. Steps went from the bottom for ascending to the peak for sacrifices and rituals. At the top was an altar. During the largest events, the prisoners that were to become sacrifices would line up on the steps on their journey to death. As the temple expanded, more buildings were added in the surrounding area. Walls were built out of skulls, in addition to more buildings to hold waiting sacrifices. The Templo Mayor was a significant statement of the power and culture of the Aztec civilization. The Aztecs were a great nation until their downfall that came about from the invasion of Europe. Though the nation of the Aztecs no longer exists, their influence on modern society in Central America is strongly felt.
