Welcome to Fugetsu-An - my place of peace and contemplation amidst the busy commercial quarter of Kyobashi.

After the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu established his government in Edo in 1603, the city rapidly prospered and expanded from its previous backwater status to become the largest city in Japan. Like Venice, Edo is a city of canals, and many of the bridges have given their names to the city's most central districts - including Kyobashi, which is short for Kyoto-bashi, "Kyoto Bridge".

The Kyobashi area houses many communities of craftsmen and artisans, who tend to gather together in their own districts. My residence is in Minami Kaji-machi - the South blacksmiths' district. Very handy for getting a custom-made katana .
