The Ancient Pueblo People – A Short Definition
The origins of the Ancient Pueblo People date back to sometime between 1500 BCE and 1 CE. The debate rages on within the Archaeological community, but most agree that the Ancient Pueblo People emerged around 1200 BCE during the Basketmaker II Era taken from the Pecos Classification System. Their sphere of influence was mainly the “Four Corners” region – the adjoining corners of modern day New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, and Utah. The Ancient Pueblo People were one of four major cultural groups who existed in the North American Southwest prior to European exploration.

Mesa Verde
Mesa Verde located in the southwestern corner of Colorado has one of the largest concentrations of archaeological sites in North America. There are over 4,000 sites with four hundred plus being discovered since the 1996 forest fire at the National Park. The only drawback to sites being discovered by forest fires is sandstone and other building materials used to make the structures are often destroyed in the fire. That said, the sites are uncovered by the fire which aides in making a clear and accurate assessment of the Mesa Verde complex.
A Chronology of Mesa Verde:
-
1073 CE - Mesa Verde not occupied
-
1250 CE - Sun Temple[Palace?] built at Mesa Verde

Cliff Palace
Cliff Palace is the largest Cliff Dwelling in North America. The site has two hundred and forty rooms including kivas. Some scholars feel that the site was able to house around two hundred and fifty people in the 1200s CE.

Trade and Economy
Mesa Verde had many talented artisans working at the complex. They were skilled in making pottery [as most of the Ancient Southwest]. The artisans also made brilliant works of turquoise jewelry as well as wood/bone tools.
