Panis Primis - The Subura's Pistrinum Winner of Rome's Best Bakery Since 165 BCE

A Short History of the Roman Bakery A pistrinum was a Roman bakery. In 168 BCE, the Collegium Pistorum or Bakers' Guild was established. Now baking bread was seen as a seperate profession. Unlike most trades where the workers were slaves, the members of the Collegium Pistorum were freemen. Although choosing to become a member of the Collegium meant that you would be a baker for the remainder of your life. Fun Fact #1 A requirment of the Collegium Pistorum stated that members were forbidden to mix with 'comedians and gladiators'. Bakers were also forbidden from attending performances at the amphitheatre. Fun Fact #2 The excavations at Pompeii have helped archaeologists determine that some pistrinum had the capability to produce thousands of loaves in a given day.
