Ο οικος Δημητριου Ξανθιππου Σκαμβωνιδης
The modest home of Demetrios Xanthippos
As you can see, my home, like that of any good Athenian, is not outwardly ostentatious. We Athenians display our prosperity in the quality of our clothes, the food and drink we present to our guests, the dishes and cups we use, and, of course, by financing choruses and important public works.
Like many houses in Athens, even in an upscale district like Skambonidai, we have a small shop space fronting the street. Rather than renting it out, we use it as an office for the family business. We are involved in the Black Sea grain trade, not just as investors (what Athenian with a little ready money at hand doesn’t put a little something into a grain shipment now and then?), but also as shippers. We own a couple of ships ourselves and do a fair business in outfitting others. If you’re trying to track me down to do a little business, on a scribal matter, or just to say hello and I don’t seem to be around, just leave a message at my οικος. If it is a more confidential matter, you can try sending a message with Skylas here. ![]() But if you do, make sure to put your name in the message. He isn’t terribly smart and tends to forget things like just who it was who gave him messages.
