The Attica of Heraklia

![]() JW Godward, Reverie
I try to spend at least a month or two a year in Athens, both because I love the theatre (far superior to Rome's) but because here the ferment of ideas is respectable - in Rome, it either doesn't exist or it's rather dangerous. This is where I spend my rebellious season.
You are welcome to visit the house! a simple one, built around a courtyard. You will note I do not, as most Athenians do, have one whole segment of the house into which the "women and slaves" are put. The hardest thing about visiting Athens is to get used to the Greek concept that women should be not seen, and not heard!
By the time of the Caesars, Romans treated having a second or third home in Athens rather like a Victorian Englishman would have a house in Paris - by right of conquest, but also with a very real respect for the intellectual accomplishments of the Hellenes.
He will show you the rest of the rooms at Heraklia's oikos.
