This cave with its delightful pools of lotuses is perfect for lazing around spending time with my celestial friends and the best thing is Buddha is just up the road.
The lotus flower (Nelumbo nucifera) is one of the most ancient and deeply significant symbols of spiritual unfoldment. Growing in muddy water it rises above the surface to bloom with remarkable beauty. At night the flower closes and sinks underwater, then at dawn it rises and opens again. Untouched by the impurity, the lotus symbolizes purity of heart and mind and represents long life, health, honor and good fortune.
In Buddhist symbolism, the lotus represents purity of the body, speech, and mind as if floating above the muddy waters of attachment and desire. Most Buddhist statues show Buddha seated on a lotus and according to legend, Gautama Buddha was born with the ability to walk and everywhere he stepped, lotus flowers bloomed. Powdered lotus is also burned as ceremonial incense, primarily in Buddhist temples.
In many Asian cultures, the lotus represents elegance, beauty, perfection, purity and grace and given feminine attributes it is mostly associated with the Goddess Lakshmi.
In the resplendent land, Subramanya known as Murugan, Kartikeya or Kataragama is considered the guardian deity of Lanka. He is often depicted with his divine spear sitting on a lotus or riding a peacock. In Lanka both Hindus and Buddhists revere the highly sacred temple at Katharagama (in Sinhala "Katharagama Devalaya") which is dedicated to him. Originally a vedic god and favoured by Tamils, his worship in India is known to extend as far back as 1000 BC.
Subramanya is adored by both Tamil Hindus and Sinhalese Buddhists in Lanka and numerous temples exist throughout the island. He is a favorite deity of the common folk everywhere and it is said he never hesitates to come to the aid of a devotee when called upon. Legends say that one day the god Murugan alighted in Kataragama and was smitten by Valli, one of the indigenous Veddha females. After a courtship, they were married and it's this event that is taken to signify that he is always accessible to all who love him, regardless of their birth or heritage.
