The Monkey Mind
Meditation is often thwarted by the monkey mind. Just like a bunch of restless monkeys jumping around, the mind jumps from one thing to another. The goal of meditation is to quieten your monkey mind and focus on the object of your meditation, whether it be your breath, a mantra or an object such as a mandala or symbol.
Observe your pet monkeys when they arise. Watch them try and grasp the bananas from the ego tree but remain detached. Let them swing on by then go back to focusing on your chosen meditation. In this way you will come to see just how disturbing your monkeys can be. Whatever you do, dont feed the monkeys. Ignore them and go back to your centre of focus and by repeatedly doing this your monkeys will eventually get bored and will go away. :D
The Unmindful Monkey
The unmindful monkey races here and there, swinging through the trees picking at the fruits of life but does not see the tiger that lays in wait. He is distracted by the shiny fruit, unmindful of his fate. Be not like the tiger's meal, swing purposely through the trees. Aware of every step along the way, the mindful monkey perceives the danger and lives to see another day...
