The Muses Clio, Euterpe, and Thalia by
Eustache Le Sueur (1616–1655)

In Greek mythology, Clio or Kleio is the Muse of history and is often represented with a parchment scroll or a set of tablets. Euterpe, called the "giver of delight", was the Muse of music and in late Classical times the muse of lyric poetry and was depicted holding a flute. Thalia was the Muse of comedy and idyllic poetry. In art, as she is here in this 17th century representation by Eustache Le Sueur, Thalia was portrayed holding a comic mask. Like all the muses, they are the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne.
