The Zi Wei Star Map

The Ziwei star map was painted in the period of Emperor Zhongzong of the Tang Dynasty and was discovered in the Mogao Grottoes of Dunhuang in 1899 along with thousands of other scrolls. This map is one of the oldest star maps from China and contains over 1350 stars depicted on it with the scroll itself measuring 2.1m long and 0.25m wide.

Zi Wei Dou Shu

Zi Wei Dou Shu literally means calculating the purple star, or one's Chinese astrological birthchart and it combines all the stars and palaces, their attributes, environmental factors, animals, the Five Elements and Yin and Yang in its interpretation.

Originally this form of divination was devised by Lu Chun Yang 呂純陽 a Daoist priest, then later during the Song dynasty it was further developed by Chen Xi Yi 陳希夷 and again by Luo Hong Xian 羅洪先 during the Ming Dynasty, manifesting into its current format. Though in looking at how the chart is set out one can see many similarities with the Indian Vedic Jyotisha system in which the Monkey king is already accomplished. It's quite possible that earlier influences from India appeared in China. We do know that Brahmins and Buddhist monks visited China and visa versa and its exact origin is still debated so it could possibly have been the original inspiration for Lu Chun Yang's system.

The chart itself is set out with 12 Palaces, or Shí Èr Gōng 十二宫 with each representing one of the 12 Chinese animals and is visually much like the south Indian vedic chart. It is arranged in anti-clockwise direction and is in the following fixed sequence:

Life Palace 命宫
Siblings Palace 兄弟宫
Marriage Palace 夫妻宫
Children Palace 子女宫
Wealth Palace 财昂宫
Health Palace 疾厄宫
Travel Palace 迁移宫
Friends, Servants Palace 仆役宫
Career Palace 官禄宫
Property Palace 田宅宫
Fortune, Virtue Palace 福德宫
Parents Palace 父母宫

In addition there is a 13th Palace called 身宫 Shēn Gōng or literally, Body Palace and a palace is affected and influenced by the adjacent palaces, the opposite palace and the related harmony palaces. Interpretations connected to these Gōngs are based on the positions of the main stars (mathematical points) in chinese astrology which are:

The 14 Main Stars:
The Emperor Star (Zi Wei)
The Mercy Star (Tian Ji)
The Sun (Tai Yang)
The Finance Star (Wu Qu)
The Lucky Star (Tian Tong)
The Wicked Star (Lian Zheng)
The Treasury Star (Tian Fu)
The Moon (Tai Yin)
The Flirting Star (Tan Lang)
The Gloomy Star (Jue Meng)
The Minister Star (Tian Shang)
The Blessing Star (Tian Liang)
The Power Star (Qi Sha)
The Ruinous Star (Po Jun)

The Six Fortunate Stars:
The Deputies I and II (Zho Fu and You Bi)
The Intellect and Intelligence Stars (Wen Chang and Wen Qu)
The Angels I and II (Tian Hui and Tian Yue)

The Six Harmful Stars:
The Troublesome (Qing Yang) and Worrisome (Tor Lor) Stars
The Fiery (Huo) and Siren (Ling) Stars
The Misfortune (Di Kong) and Calamity (Di Jie) Stars

The Transformation Stars:
Transformation into Prosperity (Hua Lu)
Transformation into Authority (Hua Quan)
Transformation into Fame (Hua Ke)
Transformation into Annoyance (Hua Ji)

It is through combining all these together that we arrive at a fairly precise interpretation of a person's birthchart. The ancient court astrologers and astronomers using these interprative principles often played major roles in the fate or selection and crowning of new emperors or auspicious events and were highly regarded in decision making processes. But like many aspects of knowledge in ancient Chinese culture, it took many years for them to master the complexities of this particular art.
