The Haunted Place
By Edgar Allen Poe
(An Exerpt)
But evil things, in robes of sorrow,
Assailed the monarch's high estate.
(Ah, let us mourn!- for never morrow
Shall dawn upon him desolate!)
And round about his home the glory
That blushed and bloomed,
Is but a dim-remembered story
Of the old time entombed.
And travellers, now, within that valley,
Through the red-litten windows see
Vast forms, that move fantastically
To a discordant melody,
While, like a ghastly rapid river,
Through the pale door
A hideous throng rush out forever
And laugh- but smile no more.
Lilith has had many transformations throughout her conception. All but the most modern interpretations of her is that she is a demon, or even a vampire. The Dark Side is a place to discuss demons such as Lilith in the world's long history.
The first known mention of Lilith seems to be in the Sumerian tale of Inanna and the huluppu-tree (which is perhaps a willow) (see above). In this story, the goddess Inanna (goddess of love and war) is saddened because the tree she plucked from the river and saved is now inhabited by three pests. In its roots, a serpent made its nest. In the branches, an Imdugud-bird had placed its young, and in the middle, the demon (Kramer calls her a Vampire) Lilith built her home. No more mention is made of Lilith in this tale, other than she built her home in the tree Inanna had planned to nurture and grow in order to build a throne and couch.
Tales of Lilith are also found in other religions. In the Jewish belief, Lilith is the female consort of Satan. There is also a myth about her being the first wife of Adam. She is said to have tried to dominate him (wanted to be on top during sex), and therefore disgusted him as well as God. She fled and in Muslim tradition, bred with Satan and produced other demons djinn. She is called Lilitu the "wind-spirit" in Assyrian and Babylonian mythology.

Please visit the GoldFest threads: Arcadia and be sure to take the "Are You A Little Angel Or A Little Devil?" quiz for a Dark Side Plaque or Sign You Name Here if you'd like to sign the guest book. Hopefully you'll have a great time this GF at my little slice of heaven...or is it hell? The other threads are open for discussions. *g*
