Visitors to this Hearth
Nearly 13,000 ft. above sea level, it was probably a religious center. It is thought to have been built by the AYMARA. Much of the construction is unfinished. It was begun before the classic period. (A.D. c.600-900) There is evidence of additional construction during the decadent period (c.1100-1300). at the end of the classic period Tiahuanaco influenced several cultures of coastal Peru. It is built of massive rocks that weigh up to 100 tons and brought from several miles away, the structure is superb masonry. Without mortar the stones were fitted to a precision and exactness in cutting, squaring, dressing, and notching equaled in no other aboriginal South American civilization, even the Inca. The construction is largely of the platform or monolithic type decorated by conventional incised carving or heads in low relief. The monolith in the center of the great temple of Tiahuanaco.
