The Roman city of Emerita Augusta was Founded in 25 BC. It became one of the most important culture centers in the Roman world. It was founded by the Emperor Augustus to protect a pass and a bridge over the Guadiana river and for a place of retirement for the veterans of the "V Alaudae" and "X Gémina" and perhaps the "XX Valeria Victrix" legions that had fought in the wars civil wars for Augustus. The town had the rank of colonia. The town soon became one of the largest cities in Hispania, with a territory of some 20.000 square kilometers. It was the capital of the province of Lusitania and an important judicial, economic, military and cultural centre.. It was named after the Lusitani or Lusitanian people. The Lusitani were strong warriors whose origins are uncertain.

Among the remaining Roman monuments are the Puente Romano, a bridge over the Guadiana river that is still used by pedestrians; an important fortification to defend the bridge, the Temple of Diana; the remains of the Forum, including the Arch of Trajan; the remains of the Circus Maximus; the Acueducto de los Milagros (aqueduct); a villa called the Mitreo; the Embalse de Proserpina and Cornalvo reservoirs; the Circus, the Amphitheatre and the Roman Theatre where a summer festival of Classical theatre is presented, usually with versions of Greco-Roman classics or modern plays located in ancient times. One can also visit the MorerÃas archaeological site and many others all around the city, and watch digging in progress, as well as the Museo Nacional de Arte Romano.
