Sippar
We read in the Sumerian Flood account that Sippar was the fourth established antediluvian city of Sumer. According to the Sumerian deluge tablet, the city was given to the hero Utu. It was one of the capitals of Sargon the Great and had a great temple to the sun god Shamash (Sumerian Utu). Excavations have revealed a walled city with a small ziggurat in the center surrounded by a group of public buildings.
Evidence shows that Sippar was occupied from the Uruk period (fourth millennium BC) until the revolt against the Persian king, Xerxes, in 481 BC. After this date, all activities in the Sippar temple seem to have ceased.
The site of ancient Sippar, known today as Abu Habbah, lies on the Euphrates in present Iraq,(20 miles (32 km) SW of Baghdad).
