Rhodes's District of
Ialysos
Archon:
Position is currently vacant
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Ialysos is situated in the northwest coast of Rhodes. Its name derives from the hero Ialysos, grandson of Helios, the Sun god. The area was inhabited from prehistoric times. A very important Minoan settlement (ca. 1600-1370 BCE) has been excavated at the locality known as "Trianda", which was later occupied by the Mycenaeans of mainland Greece, as the evidence of several chamber-tomb cemeteries nearby indicates. ![]() The Ialysos Acropolis (source: http://www.goddess-athena.org/Museum/Temples/Ialysus/Ialysus_Acropolis_Map.html) ![]() The Dorian Hexapolis (source: http://www.goddess-athena.org/Museum/Temples/Ialysus/Hexapolis_map.html) In the Early Byzantine period (5th – 6th centuries AD) a three-aisled basilica with an atrium was built over the remains of the ancient temple, while in the 10th century a single-aisled church with a cupola was constructed over it. In the time of the Franks, the site was occupied by a medieval monastery and church. -Submitted by Ioannis Nestor
