Din Tagell, Fortess of Gorlois, Duke of Cornwall ![]() ![]() Originally a tin-trading outpost with Mediterranean merchants, Din Tagell (or Tintagel) became popularly known as the place High King Arthur was conceived. The legend recounts High King Uther Pendragon's siege upon Gorlois, Duke of Cornwall. Uther's adviser Merlin supposedly cast Gorlois's visage upon the High King so that the Duke's wife Igraine would make love to him. Later in Arthur's life, Din Tagell became a monastic center, where St. Illtyd established a chapel.
Excavation in the 1930s revealed more than twenty rectangular stone buildings along terraces on the eastern slopes. A great wealth of 5th- and 6th-century Mediterranean pottery has been discovered in this area, including Tunisian oil jars, dishes from Carthage, Aegean amphorae and elaborte jars from Byzantium.
