Niflheim the "house of mists" is the far northern region of icy fogs and mists, of darkness and cold and is situated on the lowest level of the universe. The realm of death, Helheim is part of this vast, cold region and there are few inhabitants in the land of cold and mist. Niflheim is said to lie underneath the third root of Yggdrasil, close to the spring Hvergelmir, the "roaring cauldron". Also situated on this level is Nastrond, the Shore of Corpses, where the serpent Nidhogg eats them and along with his accomplices gnaws on the roots of Yggdrasil, the World Ash Tree, trying to loosen its foundation and thereby put an end to all eternally. It is also said that after Ragnarok, there will be a hall here for the punishment of murderers, oath breakers, and philanderers.
