The craftsmen who live in the Kyobashi area are fairly wealthy. Most of the workshops are in neighborhoods behind the main shopfronts. One has access to the narrow sidestreets where they live through large and solid-looking gates. The gates are part of the security system for keeping away the bands of unemployed samurai, the "ronin".
