Kingdom of Ruhuna
General Urbs
![]() The southern kingdom of Ruhuna was one of the three ancient kingdoms in Lanka known as Thun Sinhalaya. It was a Sub kingdom loyal to the King of Anuradhapura and was originally founded around 200 BC by Prince Mahanaga after a personal dispute with his brother King Devanampiyatissa at Anuradhapura. The capital was known as Magama which is near modern day Tissamaharama and the boundaries of the kingdom stretched to the Mahaveli River in the north to the Keleni River in the northwest.
Though prior to the establishment of Ruhuna as a kingdom, the first migrating Indians are said to have arrived and settled on the shores of this part of the island mainly along the banks of the Nilwala river. For over 2,300 years the fertile lands of this area have been cultivated and it was during the years of hardship and invasions in the north (1st-5th Centuries AD) that Ruhuna became the breadbasket for the northern kingdom of Anuradhapura. This enabled the people of the north to survive and help ward off the attacks of invading Indian kings. Though this was not always the case as some Indian monarchs held sway for a time. But Ruhuna remained strong and was very much instrumental for the most part in enabling the northern Sinhala kingdom to prosper until the time of their relocation and decline.
The kingdom of Ruhuna was fairly well advanced, as is evidenced by their public works. Many temples and dagobas were built by its kings and clever hydrological engineers had constructed a number of artificial resevoirs (tanks) to irrigate large tracts of land for cultivation. Being able to store huge volumes of water during the long dry season was certainly advantageous and thus the kingdom led a generally prosperous and peaceful existence.
