Germania Superior's Urbs of...
Moguntiacum
General Urbs
Moguntiacum, Agri Decumetes

Modern name: Mainz

Moguntiacum started out as a major, permanent camp for Roman legions. Drusus, a Roman general, founded the place in 13 BC.

Mainz derieved its name from the Latin word Menus , which was used for ‘rivers' by the Romans. Coming from the word Moguntiacum, this word plays a significant role as Roman soldiers adopted the Gallic god Mogons to defend Gallia during the medieval time.

The words ‘Mogounus', ‘Moguns' or ‘Mogonino', which meant "the great one", as in reference to the Latin magnus, thereby adding details to the term Alexander magnus, popularly known to be "Alexander the Great" and Pompeius magnus that meant "Pompey the great", or the god of "might" as of those with noble birth. Today Moguntiacum is recognised as a military town as it is well placed in the midst of Main and the Rhine rivers.

When the Rhine froze, many barbarian tribes crossed it at Moguntiacum. The Allemani tribe sacked the town in 368.
