Land of the gods, or god-sized parties!

The Eponymous Gods of Olympia were the rulers after the titans were overthrown.
The name Olympian comes from their dwelling place on Mount Olympus.
The origin of gods and goddesses Hera, Hestia, Poseidon, Hades, and Zeus came from the union of Kronos with his sister Rhea.
The following is the description of twelve Olympian gods and their origin.

Titans
Zeus overthrew Kronos his father and imprisoned him in Tartaros.
Zeus was worried his own sons would try to overthrow him and is said to have swallowed Metis, his first wife before she could conceive a first born son to him.
Metis was pregnant during that incident, and the baby was born through the head of Zeus. The baby's name was Athena. Zeus then drew lots with Poseidon and Hades his brothers.
He emerged as the winner and became the supreme ruler of the gods.
Zeus is the lord of the sky and the rainfall.
The thunderbolt is Zeus's weapon and he hurls it at those people who displease him.
His symbols include the eagle and bull. Hera is the sister of Zeus and also his wife.

Titans
Hera was raised by the Tethys and the Titan Oceanus.
Hera protects marriages and she gives special care to the women.
The marriage of Hera was founded in strife with the god Zeus and in strife it continued.
Zeus's attempts to court Hera were unsuccesessful so Zeus transformed himself into a disheveled cuckoo.
Hera felt sorry for the bird and decided to hold it close to her breast to keep it warm.
Zeus took that opportunity and transformed himself back to his original form, and forced himself upon Hera. Hera then married him in order to cover the shame.
Zeus was overbearing to the other gods and his wife Hera convinced the gods to come together in revolt.
She was to drug Zeus, and the other gods were to bind him to a couch.
They then started arguing about the next step.
The arguments were so loud that Briareus overheard them; he was full of gratitude to Zeus, so he slipped in and untied Zeus.
Zeus sprang up from the couch and got hold of his thunderbolt.
The other gods fell on their knees pleading and begging for mercy.
Zeus took revenge on Hera and with gold chains hung her in the the sky.
All night Hera wept in pain but no other god dared interfere.
Zeus was kept awake by the wailing of his wife throughout the night and the next morning Zeus agreed to release her with the condition that she not be rebellious again.
With no other option Hera could only agree to Zeus but she always managed to outwit him.
Hera's stories revolve around her revenge against the infidelity of Zeus.
The cow and the peacock were the sacred animals for Hera.
Argos was her favorite city.

Titans
Poseidon is Zeus brother.
Poseidon and is known as the lord of the sea. Seamen widely worshiped him.
He was married to Amphitrite, who was Titan Oceanus's granddaughter.
Poseidon also admired and desired Demeter; she asked him to craft the most beautiful animal the world has ever seen, just to try to put him off.
For Demeter, Poseidon created the first horse.
The trident is the weapon of Hades and he uses it to shatter any object or shake the world.

He is known as the god of wine, party and merry-making. Dionysus rescued Ariadne after she had been abandoned by Theseus.
Dionysus saved his mother from the Underworld, after Zeus attacked her with his thunderbolt.
It was Dionysus who granted Midas the power to turn whatever he touched into gold, then was kind enough to take the power back when it proved inconvenient.
His symbols are the grape and ivy.

Titans
Ares is the son of Zeus and Hera.
He is known as the god of war, frenzy and bloodlust. He is not well liked by his parents.
Ares is usually accompanied in battle by the gods Deimos and Phobos (the spirits of terror and fear) and by his sister Enyo (the Goddess of bloodshed), and Alala, whose name became his battle war-cry.
Ares was the father of a water dragon that was killed by Cadmus.
The dragon’s teeth were sown into the ground and fully grown Spartans sprung up out of them.
So Spartans are said to be the descendants of Ares.
Cadmus then married Harmonia, the daughter of Ares and founded the city of Thebes.
Ares also had an affair with Aphrodite while she was married to Hephaestus.
Though the tryst had been caught, that did not stop Ares from continuing his secret liaisons with Aphrodite.
Adonis was another lover of Aphrodite and was killed by the jealous Ares who took on the form of a boar.

Titans
Athena is Zeus's daughter. In battle she is brave and fierce but she only fights when she is protecting her home and state from outside enemies.
She is the city's goddess and she is also the goddess of the handicrafts, and agriculture.
She invented the bridle which was used by men to tame the horse; she also invented the trumpet, the pot, the flute, the Yoke, the chariot, the ship, and the rake.

Harnessing his chariot with his four horses to drive the sun across the sky is one of the most important daily tasks of Apollo.
In Delphi he is famous for his oracle and people could travel to it to divine the future from all over the Greek world.
Laurel is his tree, the crow is his bird and dolphin is his animal.

Titans
Aphrodite is the goddess of desire, love, and beauty.
On top of her natural gift Aphrodite has a girdle which is magical and it causes anyone she wishes to desire her. She has two birth accounts.
One describes her as the daughter of Dione and Zeus, while the other tracks down the castration of Uranus where his genitals were tossed to the sea.
It is believed that Aphrodite arose from the foam of the sea on a scallop where she walked to the shores of Cyprus.
She is married to Hephaestus. Her tree is the myrtle; her birds are the dove, sparrow, and the swan.

Titans
Hermes is Zeus and Maia's son. He is the messenger of Zeus. Hermes is the fastest of all gods.
He puts on winged sandals, winged hat, and he carries a magic wand.
He is the god of commerce and thieves. He guides the dead to go to the underworld.
He is the inventor of the lyre, musical scale, the pipe, weights and measures, astronomy, gymnastics, and the olive tree care.

Titans
Artemis is Zeus and Leto's daughter. Apollo is her twin brother.
She is the goddess of the hunt and protecter of the young.
She hunts with silver arrows just like Apollo. She is a virgin, and is known as goddess of chasitity.
She presides over the childbirths. The cypress is her tree.
All animals of the wild are sacred to her particularly the deer.

Titans
Hephaestus is Zeus and Hera's son.
It is said sometimes that he was solely produced by Hera and that he does not have a father.
Hephaestus is the only physically ugly and lame god.
Accounts on how he became lame do vary. Some accounts say that Hera got upset when she had an ugly child, therefore she flung him from the mount Olympus into the deep sea, and this broke the child's legs.
The other account suggests that Hephaestus took side with his mother during an argument between Hera and Zeus, and this made Zeus fling him off the Olympus mount.
Hephaestus is the god of forge and the fire.
He is the armoire and smith of the other gods. For his forge he uses the volcano.
He is the patron of both the blacksmiths smiths and metalworkers.
He is also known as the god of technology and is the forger of arms and armour of Greek heroes.
His symbols are the axe, fire and hammer.
He loves peace and he is kind. Aphrodite is his wife.
