Close to the palace, the theater district is one of the busiest places in Aegae

Theater At Aegae

The theater district is next to the palace district and an area of smaller residences and commercial enterprises which take advantage of the often large crowds of visitors.

Although excavations were begun in 1982, much of the area remains to be uncovered. It must have been quite large as it accommodated a considerable amount of people. We know that Philip II invited all of his guest friends in Hellas to the wedding of his daughter, Kleopatra, here in 332 BCE and invited them to invite all of their guest friends as well. As the entire court and their families would have been included, it was certain to have been quite a large structure.

It was on the occasion of that wedding that Philip was assassinated and Alexander The Great became King Of Macedon.

The theater was not used only for plays, but served also as a gathering place for official ceremonies of Macedon. Only 22 miles from Pella, it was but a days journey and remained an important destination even after the capitol was moved.

In the theater district are two major temples associated with Atremis and Demeter/Kore. These are the Hellenic name associations although they are but thinly disguised continuations of the old earth mother cult of Macedon and the surrounding areas.
