Worcester is a place where Christianity has been practised since Roman times.

Worcester is a place where Christianity has been practised since Roman times. The fact that Worcester was chosen as the seat of a bishopric in 680 AD indicates that the town had a strong existing community of British Christians since other important towns nearby, like Gloucester and Winchcombe, were overlooked. Originally, Worcester had been served by a minster, but Bishop Oswald replaced this with a Benedictine monastery established in 983 AD, which is the basis of the cathedral today.

Worcester had come under the control of the Hwicce in the sixth century, and increasingly came under Mercian control. It was established as a burh in the late ninth century, surviving the Viking raids with little damage, and was a rich and thriving town with local manufacturing and extensive trading links.
