Toletum
District Leader:
Position is currently vacant
Hispalis, Visigoths, Moors, Architecture
In 567 AD Toletum, modern-day Toledo, became the capital of the Visigothic kingdom in Spain under King Leovigild. The Visigoths had arrived in the Iberian peninsula a century and a half before, sweeping aside first the Celtic tribes and then establishing predominance over the Vandals and the Suebi.
Toletum had an important role as a centre of Christianity, and held an number of church councils. It remained the pre-eminent Visigothic city until the Moorish conquest in the early eighth century, when it was abandoned as the Visigoths fell back in order to regroup their forces.
Toletum is famous for its medieval and Moorish architecture.
