The Garrison and Town of Pi'ramesse

Surrounding the Palance and the temple district of Pi'ramesse is its supporting town, located in time in the 19th Dynasty.

There is a large garrison, both for city defense and for gathering troops for one or other of the Ramissid pharaohs' military engagements. Frequent displays of military might stir the ambitions and support of the citizenry.

On the outskirts of town, and in those places where there are no docks directly providing access to the Nile to the townspeople, there are rich fertile farmlands, swept to a great distance in this flat delta land, by the yearly innudations of the Nile. The town proper is set back aways from the Nile, because yearly re-building can be so annoying...

The needs of the Palace are grand, sometimes grandiose. Offerings to the netjer themselves require much in the way of sacrifice. Many of the citizenry are directly employed in providing for the animals and the grains and the vegetables required by the highest nobility to show their regard for the sacred. Craftsmen and handiworkers live here in abundance, plying their trades.

The town also hosts a large bazaar, where, for a price in trade, anything might be had. Exotic spices from Hittite and Sumerian lands may even be had, for Pi-rameses is a cosmopolitan locale.

Construction workers live in temporary encampments on the outskirts of Pi-rameses, called in for any number of Palace or temple upgrades.

A large apiary graces an outer borough, where bees can feast undisturbed on flowers, and provide honey for royal appetites, medicinals and ritual use.

Large barges are maintained by the Pharaoh, both for ceremonial tours and for military purposes. Envoys constantly come and go, to all parts of the Two Lands, and to foreign potentates.

Many musicians and dancers live here, called on to entertain both at royal or noble functions, or to provide amusements for the men of the garrison. Needless to say there is a large supporting servant class.

The garrison itself contains bunked areas for the common fighters, with increasingly more private quarters for the commanding officers. A large practice field is available for the mandatory drills.

A polished infrastructure of scribes and beaurocrats, all of whom live in town, keep the complicated machineries of state oiled.
