Edo's District of
Yoshiwara
Administrator:
The pleasure quarter.

Outcasts, criminals and prostitutes, they all lived in the same quarter at the edge of the city of Edo, in Yoshiwara (now called Asakusa). The brothels were surrounded by earthen walls. A single entrance gate ensured surveillance of those entering or leaving the quarter. Business districts for the supporting trades and other forms of entertainment rapidly developed around the district. Free of the traditional class distinctions, this secluded quarter of the city was governed by a free-market economy under standards and ethics developed by its residents.
A yoshiwara maintained a strict ceremonial code. Its rules and its established rituals imbued the quarter with an atmosphere of refinement, and mystery. The women were ranked according to their beauty, character, educational level and accomplishments. This quarter served as inspiration for the ukiyo-e artists, who conveyed the essence of the social stratification, lifestyle, or expectations and disappointments of a woman's life in the yoshiwara.
