Reate is surrounded by rich, fertile countryside once known as the Velia. Watered by the Avens, Tolenus, and Nar rivers,* the land north and west of Reate is marked by small lakes and marshes, such as the Reatinea Paludes. This area has often by subject to flooding by the Avens and Tolenus rivers. The great engineering project carried out by Manius Curius Dentatus cut away part of the mountain to drain the Lacus Velinus into the Nar, creating the famous waterfall.

Drainage of the lake recovered the upland plains of the river valley for agriculture, and this area of exceptionally good soil is known as the Rosea. Investors in land will appreciate the many opportunities for property development in this district. The fields and orchards of the Rosea produce a significant amount of food for Rome.

The Montes Gurgures, stretching from the outskirts of Reate to the northern part of the district, are used for pasturage of many flocks and herds of livestock.

About ten miles to the northwest of Reate, the small village of Maruvium is located near the pure springs of the Septem Aquae. Several other small villages originally established by the aborigines of the region before the Sabine conquest are still found in the Rosea. Palatium lies 3 miles to the west of Reate near the Quintian Way. Corsula is 10 miles north of Reate along the Curian Way past Mount Coretus. Batia is 3.7 miles to the south. Each of these small villages is now surrounded by farms and villas.

* The modern names for the Avens, Tolenus, and Nar rivers are the Velino, Turano, and Nera. The waterfalls created by Curius Dentatus, known as the Cascata della Marmore, are commonly referred to in English as the Falls of Terni.
