Reate was one of the first towns built by the ancient Sabines long before Rome itself was founded. Many of the finest Roman families have Sabine ancestors, and Reate is an ideal place to connect with this virtuous heritage. The scholar Varro was born here and wrote major works of history, grammar, and agriculture in Reate after retiring from a public career in Rome. Other notable Reatines include the father and grandfather of Vespasianus Caesar, who traded mules in town as a young man.
Explore Rome’s history in Reate as well. The consuls M’. Curius Dentatus and M. Porcius Cato had farms just outside town. Visit the Cato Library and homestead to learn more about this Roman statesman.
History and culture come alive in Reate.
Reate is also an excellent place to locate a new business. The town is surrounded by some of the most productive land in central Italy. As a center for agro-business, Reate offers the commercial investor:
- Markets for animals, produce, oil, and wine
- Buyers, storehouses, wagons, and transport to Rome and other destinations
- Undeveloped land for villae and estate farming
Choice properties are available in the municipium of Reate and the surrounding ager Reatinus. To get started, visit the land registry office today.
But Reate offers much more! As a popular destination for resort tourism, Reate is a great place to stay when you explore the heritage, sights, and natural wonders of the Sabine countryside:
- Wander the stalls of the booksellers in the Forum to find the works of local writers like Cato, Varro and Sallust
- Leave an offering to the protecting gods on a visit to the temples and sacred groves of Reate and Cutiliae
- Restore your health in the nearby springs of Aquae Cutiliae and Septem Aquae
- Buy a boat to punt along the Avens in summer
- Catch fish fresh from the river or sample local dishes at the many inns and taverns
- Browse the shops full of crafts, furniture, and finely turned pottery or glassware
Whether you stay a week or a year, plan your visit today!
