Kalevala's District of
Kyöpelinvuori
District Leader:
Kyöpelinvuori is a mountain where virgins who have died gather to haunt and "live" as mountain witches who fly on brooms with black cats.
They are called witch hags, sorcerers and trullis. (In Finnish: noita-akka, velho, trulli). The hags raid and plunder near and far villages, cutting hair from cattle and if you see an extra broom lying around, you probably just caught a witch in disguise. After raids, the witches gather at Kyöpelinvuori, where 'Old Nick' weighs their booty. Then they feast with food made by magic out of straw, cattle hair and manure. During Easter, the witches leave the area during Easter in order to spook children and people who gather to crossroads to hear their future told by witches who fly over and whisper, mostly untruths, to mess with people's minds. In some areas, people burn Easter bonfires to expel the hags. Traditionally Finnish girls dress up as witches and go from door to door, giving pussy willow branches (catkins) to people in exchange of candy eggs.
