Gardar, an original viking settlement, is known today by its modern Greenland name of Igaliku and is situated in the south of Greenland. It is best known for the ruins of Garšar, once considered the main religious heart of 12th century Norse Greenland controlled by the Norse bishops. In AD 1125 the first bishop of Greenland was appointed and he took his seat in Gardar. His name was Arnald and he was the biggest landowner in Greenland and he established a monastry and convent there.

Today, the ruins of the Vikings Cathedral and the Bishop's home can be found there. The actual cathedral was large and had dimensions of 88.5 x 52.5 feet, and was the biggest of all the churches in Greenland in the Middle Ages. During modern excavations, a bishop's staff was found and a small monument has been erected at the site.
