Meditrinalia and Fontinalia Approaching!
dateline: Sep 21, 2003 - 09:13

Events, contests, trivias, races and a Satyre in Rome October 13-15! Check here for home graphics, descriptions of events, and latest schedules.

Graphic by Senex Caecilius The Roman GoldFest this October 13-15, Meditrinalia & Fontinalia, will include events which include meeting, greeting, having fun - and loads of history! Traditionally Meditrinalia was the festival of the new wine, in honour of both the goddess of medicine Meditrina and Jupiter, as a god of wine. Fontinalia, for its part, continued the Meditrinalia celebrations - it is quite likely Romans were healing their hangover with some more wine and water from the fountains - as a festival to honour the fountains of Rome. Thus, in October, Rome will be seeing an unpreceded combination of wine and water flowing!

Events of Meditrinalia & Fontinalia

Most of the Meditrinalia & Fontinalia events have already been planned and scheduled, although later changes are of course possible. All festivities will be conducted at the Meditrinalia topic, except for the Great Satyre of the last day, which will take place at The Theatre of Marcellus.

Although Meditrinalia and Fontinalia were traditionally celebrated a couple of days earlier, our festivities are a part of the overall site Goldfest and thus, the days allocated to Rome are October 13-15. Each day, the festivities will be conducted at 10 and 11 am, as well as 3, 5, and 7 pm. The order of specific types of events planned will also vary so that as many citizens as possible could catch at least one item to their liking! Also do not forget to Pick up Your Meditrinalia invitation to be added to your domus! There are two different styles of invitations, both by Rome's own Diantha Livius, as well as a beautiful plaque by Camilla Lucretius. The Factions Make Their Choices of Charioteers
Edwinus considered the list of charioteers being hanged in prominent places around the Circus Maximus. As an experienced lover of the race, he considered the possibilities with a gambler’s eye:

The Blue Faction had decided to start with old “Vulterius” (the Vulture), tried and true master of the circus, and one who had obtained his nickname by his uncanny ability to take advantage of the bad luck of others. “O Fortuna! The Blues are playing a serious game this time!” one passerby noted and laughed.

Next listed was the Green’s beautiful “Adonis,” Beloved of Venus. How the dominae loved him! “Fortunately for the Greens, Adonis is no 'Timidus' in the arena!” an ardent Green told Edwinus then encouraged a bold bet on the man. Edwinus thought the drawing of the charioteer hardly did him justice. It is said that he has Celtic blood.

The ardent Reds have started with the Greek Apateon (the Cheat). “The gods always smile on this Odysseus!” another frequenter of the games exclaimed. “Apateon will have the wheels off everyone else’s chariots and be ready to sell them back on the next turn!” This was met with general laughter by the crowd now assembled.

Finally, Edwinus read out the White Faction’s choice, “Utcha Sep (Good Luck)!” “Utcha Sep?” echoed another man. “Isn’t he that bizarre little Egyptian…the one with the long arms who once balanced on the back of his horses and, in that way, survived a terrible collision? I bet it is he! What a miracle man! He will be using his Egyptian magic on the others! A sorcerer, no doubt!”

The dickering then began as one gambler after another claimed to have special knowledge about the race, the charioteers, the teams of horses, and the chariots “of Olympian design”! Edwinus sought out a taverna where he knew the “Venerables” of the Circus Maximus liked to hang out and exchange tidbits of gossip 'straight from the horses' mouth' or near about.

Sounds good, Edwinus!
I have been a bit lazy and having a flu too, but I got something fixed together, as promised. (I cannot actually direct races, because I have only two posts/day, so I thought this might do?

3D chariot Race

It's not really much, but at least something to fiddle with while waiting for the better races, ie. Edwinus' to start again.

I might be here for the games or not, if not: Happy Medinitronalia!

And free Aqua Fennica for all! (Paullus, your private resources are thus filled, forever, as others' too).
