I have been discussing this topic with quite a few people today. Those who participate in the creation or execution of festivals take away much more than higher participation levels.
During the creation of festivals, some creators learn new coding tricks as they try to make their threads look good. Others push themselves to create better graphics. Still others learn important leadership skills and how to coordinate events.
Participants come away with having learned more about the history/mythology/culture of the world hosting the event. It is amazing what someone can retain by participating in fun events such as quizzes, hunts and adventures. The bonus is, they have fun learning!
From the social aspect, "pub crawls" (which I agree with QC should begin to be moved to chatrooms) offer people a chance to meet new friends. Socializing is a large part of being a community and it can bring people together in a fun and interactive way.
As you can see, there are quite a few postiive attributes to festivals than one might see at first glance.

Or read the book, for that matter. But, the Golden Compass does look to be an interesting movie, even if it is for children. *grins*
I did take the quiz, to find out who my daemon is, a black cat named Adan.

I love this Victorian Holiday! I tracked my dear stalker to a booth and purchased some peppermints from him. Then, I was able to test my newly freshened breath with a kiss! Oooh-la-la! *grins*
Elsewhere....
I received 8/10 right on this test!

Dear Stalker,

I am feeling unwanted. I bathed last night and approached my open window in nothing but a towel. I looked hard at the bushes and did not see anything of note. I let my towel slip a little and nary a bush stirred. Scanning my shrubs with my binoculars, I saw nothing, not even an eyelash. Have you really gone on to other stockings?

To my cyber-stalker

I now know who you are and that you have followed me to Egypt. Beware lest you become caught in your own web. It takes two to stalk and the sauce that's good for the gander is also good for the goose.

In Stockholm Sweden, August 23-28 in the year of Our Lord, 1973, there was a bank heist. The robbers took hostages and did not release them for six days. By this time, the captives became loyal to their kidnappers and defended them once they were released. It is from this case that we coin the term, “Stockholm Syndrome”.

DRUID’S KNOT
Go to the Grove and hug a tree
A Druid wise is what you’ll be.
You will tread the ancient path
But don’t forget to take your bath.
