Bast Fest

After much time and preparation, it is finally here! Everyone has done so much to make this such a special festival for Egypt, but I have to give a special thanks to Sem who coordinated our efforts and managed not to yell at me...except for just now. It seems she is in desperate need of Scotch. *laughs*
So far, I have put up some Catty Captions and adopted this adorable creature:

At Bast-Menekh.
There is so much to see and do and I am off to explore the wonders of Bast!

Now at Peace

I have been away for a while, and plan on being away for longer, due to my grandfather's passing. He died last Tuesday at 11:00 AM, surrounded by family. We had been told the previous Friday that he would not last through the night. He had a high fever, would not wake up and had low oxygen levels. He hung in there until all of the family could come in and see him one last time - waking very briefly every once in a while to smile at us and tell us he loved us too.
By the end, it was painful to hear him struggle for every breath. He would no longer wake up and it was agonizing for us to see him like that. But, we stayed and talked to him and held his hand, comforted him as much as we could. Now, finally he is at peace and breathing freely.
He was a wonderful grandfather, father, husband, uncle, brother. He will be missed by us all and many of his long-time friends and co-workers came to his funeral. We shared our favorite stories about him, as we said our last goodbyes.
He was one of America's Greatest Generation. He served as a B-24 radio operator and gunner in the US Army Air Corps during WWII. He was awarded with three medals during his time in the war: The Distinguished Flying Cross Medal (with an oak leaf cluster), The Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal (with two oak leaf clusters), and The Good Conduct Medal.
My grandfather will always remain one of my personal heros.

Just to catch you all up on my life and AE/AW.

First, I guess I should let you know that I will be gone next week. Depending on my grandfather, who's health is declining rapidly, of course. He has been very weak and sleeps a lot. The MRSA is gone, yet still his strength is sapped.
Also, we are going through another family crisis which relates to the above. All I'll say is that the vultures are circling and we non-vulture types are pooling our resources and standing together to stop them from landing.
In happier news, I have purchased three new books on AE. They are: "Religion and Magic in Ancient Egypt" by Roalie David, "Ancient Egypt: An illustrated reference to the myths, religions, pyramids and temples of the land and the pharaohs" by Lorna Oakes and Lucia Gahlin, and "The Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead" by R.O. Faulkner. My husband gave me $50.00 gift cards to Barnes and Noble and so I splurged on these new books. *grins*
When I do come back from my week off, I hope to get things back on track as for the front page remodel. Bast Fest is something people should feel encouraged to help with. I had a sneak preview and it is going to be stunning! There are still events that you can take under your wing if you're interested! Please contact either Sementawy or Taysat if you would like to help!

The Festival of the Cat Goddess, Bast, is back this year! Sementawy, Taysat, Hilarity and Asenath are working together to put together a spectacular Bast Fest this year. If you want to help with the planning, I believe there are still some proposed events which have not been taken by planners. Simply post on the thread if you are available or interested in one of them!
Who is Bast? Here is a little something from wikipedia.org to help refresh your memory:
Bast (also spelled Bastet, Baset, Ubasti, and Pasht) is an ancient solar and war goddess, worshipped at least since the Second Dynasty. The centre of her cult was in Per-Bast (Bubastis in Greek), which was named after her. Originally she was viewed as the protector goddess of Lower Egypt, and consequently depicted as a fierce lioness. Indeed, her name means (female) devourer. As protector, she was seen as defender of the pharaoh, and consequently of the later chief male deity, Ra, who was a solar deity also, gaining her the titles Lady of Flame and Eye of Ra. |

Why I have been gone
|

I have been away for a while because of a family emergency. On January First, my brother sister and I all showed up at our grandfather's hospital room (he has been battling pnemonia since Thanksgiving and has been in and out of the hospital since) to wish him a Happy New Year. He was in good spirits and joking around. I left there knowing that he would be released on Thursday and there was nothing for me to worry about.
On Wednesday, the following day, my sister called about 9 AM and said, "Did you hear about Grandpa?" I said I hadn't and she went on to explain that at 2 AM, he had developed a fever of 106* and they did not know what the cause was. He was in ICU and the doctors predicted we would lose him in a matter of days (two to be precise).
My mother in law came and took my son, because I did not want a toddler coming to ICU with me. Then, I took a shower and was about to head up to the ICU. My sister had called while I was in the shower and told me that our grandfather may be gone by the time I arrived. He was unresponsive, his kidneys were failing and his blood pressure had dropped dangerously low. Nobody could make him come to and the nurses predicted he would be gone in about 15 minutes.
So, I rushed to the hospital, frantic. I called my sister to get an update and she was laughing. I was offended, to tell the truth. "What is so funny?" I asked. Grandpa had come back to us. Everyone was crowded in that tiny room, crying and trying to make him come out of it, when all of a sudden he coughed. The cough woke him up and he looked around at all those teary faces. "What are you doing here?" he asked the crowd.
After that, he began to recover at a more rapid pace. His kidneys began to function normally, his temperature was down, but his blood pressure was still too low. The cultures came back and they found the reason for all of these symptoms. Sometime since Thanksgiving, our grandfather had contracted MRSA.
We now have to wear gloves, disposable gowns and face masks when seeing him. He is still weak and may never recover fully. It does not help the situation any that we cannot get within three feet of him. Nor does it help him that he cannot live with our grandmother in the nursing home anymore. He is now in a small room in another building. It breaks one's heart to know they are being kept apart in the end.
This is why I haven't been on much lately. I may continue not to be on at a later date, depending on how things go with my grandfather.
The family is hopeful, he is a tough man, but we are afraid to be too hopeful.

The Establishing of the Celestial Cow begins tomorrow! We have a lot of wonderful events for you to participate in and we hope you have fun and enjoy your time in Egypt! But, don't forget to sign up for the contests!
Where in the West Bank is a treasure hunt of sorts! I do so love a good hunt with lots of clues to challenge my tiny brain cells. *grins* The Celestial Cow has disappeared in the West Bank and we need you to help find her by following the clues shaped like stars. Good Luck!
Decorate a Celestial Cow promises to be another fun event. We have so many talented artists at Ancient Worlds (even if you consider yourself a novice, I still like to see your artwork). I am looking forward to seeing the many Celestial Cow creations you come up with!
The other events run from the 29th through the 31st. They promise to be fun and exciting. I am really impressed by all the hard work and events our planners have come up with! Egypt has a great bunch of people and I hope to see you here to meet all of them!
