This one takes elements of Journey to the West and another chineese story too I think -
Sign of the Qin: Outlaws of Moonshadow Marsh
I actually liked this one, it had this playful and adventurous flavor to it but still with Asian overtones.
Another one I've yet to read

"A Thousand Years of Love."
by Avia Belle Moon
I haven't read it yet but it looks promising.

The Tokaido Road: A novel of Feudal Japan by Lucia St. Claire Robson
Some books and Movies

Kij Johnson's two books "Fudoki" and "The Fox Woman"
Lian Hearn's "Tales of the Otori" triology: "Across the Nightengale Floor" and "Grass for his Pillow" the third is coming out later this year.
The movie verson of Onmyoji with the character Abe no Seimei. Hmmm, although I also have the Japanese manga version (all the volumes) but they aren't translated like the movie is.
"Tales of Genji" by Murasaki Shikibu although it's pretty old (around 11th century?) for those who don't mind a challenge...
Translated versions of the Kojiki and Nihongi (Nihon Shoki) though that is a bit of dry reading, great insights into Japanese belief system.
There's also a mystery series that takes place in Heian Japan but I can't remember the name or the author at the moment...I've never read it myself but I did come across it in Borders.
