Loathsome weather
|
Posted at 17:00 EST
|
It was 40C yesterday with what felt like 80% humidity - truly loathsome weather - and in the first month of autumn! Enough to turn a sane person 'troppo'. I lurked in the butchers until I ran out of excuses - how many chops, fillet and sausages does one need in one hit anyway? Going outside was like being punched in the chest with the heat. I couldn't even bear the heat of my own breath.
Oh, to be able to ditch the gear and roll in pristine white snow - it had its attractions yesterday! I think I live at the wrong end of the world ;) |

Lunching at Galatoire's
|

Heraklia is meeting Justina and myself there at 12 noon for lunch - can't wait! Not only meeting up with our venerable and august demi-goddess but having a knock-up lunch to boot ;) Does life get any better than this!
It's warm and muggy but I have a feeling this will not deter our shopping expedition after lunch - French Quarter here we come! Pounds and Aussie dollars are in danger of being squandered...severe danger ;) |

Costume for the Avatar Ball?
|
Posted at 11:15 EST
|
What costume? Justina will be very disappointed in me but life got too hectic there in those last few days before we left and while I had the fabric paint and the requisite fabric I just had no time.
I wonder what I can dig up in my travels? Hmmmmmm... |

An alien in an alien land

We arrived in Jackson, Wyoming this afternoon after two days in Idaho. Sitting at the base of a big mountain as I type this in the midst of some spectacular scenery - it's hard not to really like this place. There is no common ground between the landscape here and that of home - they are worlds apart. We plan to head for Yellowstone the day after tomorrow. Mountain exploration tomorrow. Argh, I'm being hassled to get off the computer...so rude ;)
....and back again. It's amazing what sheer intimidation can achieve ;) Those at AWA would be proud of me. But this distracts from my purpose...looking out the window I can see an actual mountain...not a geographical pimple such as we have in Oz. Because Australia is such an ancient place, weathering has obliterated (leveled?) the peaks in the high lands we have there. Very different landforms, still beautiful in their own right but as different from this as chalk and cheese which is a peculiar expression to say the least. The vegetation is so different too - no gums, blue spruce galore on the lower levels - in Oz, you have to guard your blue spruce like a hawk as they are often dug up and nicked....very expensive plants but so beautiful. But that gets away from things...
It's deliciously crisp and NO HUMIDITY! That is a bonus in its own right. The altitude where we are is over 6000 feet - I get very breathless with any exertion - us sea level folk just ain't used to it ;)
I just can't stop taking photographs! Hardly surprising ;) We're off to explore the Grand Tetons mountains today...Yellowstone will just have to wait until tomorrow.
You beauty!

Resolution...at last!

Finally, something that feels right and is culturally correct! And easy to do which is probably more to the point ;)

Relief
|

|
I've finally resolved my costume thinking! A considerable relief and it should be relatively simple for this non-'sewer' to construct. Somehow that didn't come out quite the way I'd expected ;) I'm cheating though as I'm going to adopt a cross-cultural approach: a Greek or Roman-styled garmet topped with an AEgyptian headdress. One does have to make allowances for skills and finances after all. At least I've abandoned the bedsheet idea ;)
Only just over 5 weeks until we depart for American shores - I can't quite believe the time has gone as quickly as it has! |

This is nail-biting material - nearly two weeks have shot past without me doing a thing to further the cause of my costume. If it wasn't for a very dear friend who has offered to let me borrow a headpiece complete with uraeus, I'd be going starkers. Hopefully it won't come to that ;) |
