Tonight's WTF moment on The History Channel

So I settled down to watch their program "Ancient New York" this evening on July 1. It's a bit where they show how a lot of the modern features of NYC build on or copy the past.
I could tell it was pretty much a cut and paste rehash of previous programs, but I was cool with that.
At least until the end when they went into the bit about the Colosseum.
Now I can somewhat forgive them for the bit on Domitian's naumachia in the Colosseum, where they have some modern engineer express a lack of understanding how it was done, all the while I and this channel know they had an earlier program on just how it was done, but the next part had me wondering if the producers had just given up on fact checking.
That was where, having stated that Domitian staged a naumachia in the Colosseum in 85 AD, they then stated that his successor had to come up with a bigger show. Who was it that they stated was his successor? Claudius, with his naumachia on Lake Fucinus in 41 AD.
Now, just roll that around in your head for a bit.
How in the world did the producers let this slip past? Hell, how did the narrator miss it and not stop and say, "ummm, hey guys...?"
The History Channel has made some notable howlers in the past, but this is just plain damn embarrassing. |
